Types of Bonds:

Surety Bond- An alternative to Cash Bail*, a surety bond is used when the accused cannot afford to pay his or her bail. The court may require cash, real estate, or the signature of a professional bail bond agent. A friend or family member usually contacts a bail bonds agent who (backed by a special type of insurance company) agrees to pay the full value of the bond if the accused does not appear in court. In return, the client is charged a 7% - 10% premium and depending on the case will collect some sort of collateral such as a title for a house, car, boat, jewelry, or electronics.
*Cash Bond- A Cash bond is when the court requires the accused to pay the entire amount in cash or money order to the court in full. The purpose of this is to secure his or her return to court on an appointed date and thereafter until the case is concluded. If the defendant shows up to all of their appointed court dates, the cash is returned to them. If they fail to appear, the cash is forfeited to the court.
